Coaching for Success

How to engage with this module

Work Integrated Learning (WIL) takes place in a variety of contexts, and provides opportunities for rich teaching and learning experiences to aid the development of students. Every WIL relationship includes a student, a WIL partner (i.e. organisational sponsor or supervisor), and a unit/course coordinator, and Coaching for Success has been designed with these three audiences in mind.

Are you a student, WIL partner or academic? Find out how to gain the most from this module. (1:38). Transcript

Coaching for success has been designed for three distinct audiences: for our students, for our work integrated learning partners, and for the unit coordinators or the teaching and learning teams that design work integrated learning experiences. So with that in mind the content might seem quite generic or straight down the line without a lot of context that's added to it but we do provide moments where we try and provide the student perspective, the work integrated partner perspective and the unit coordinator perspective and I would ask that as you go through this module that you try and think not only from your own perspective so not just from your own shoes but from the shoes of perhaps the other two stakeholders, from, if you're a student, from the work integrated learning partner's perspective and from your unit coordinator and from your teaching and learning teams perspective. This will just help you understand a little bit of the background, some of the struggles that we have around trying to deploy coaching into a work integrated learning context but also some of the benefits and some of the benefits to you but also some of the benefits towards the purpose of that work integrated learning experience as well. So as you go through, just try and keep active of mind what those different perspectives look like and perhaps that might explain why your questions may not be answered directly and why you might have a question answered with another question and understanding the value of that for your learning as you through work integrated learning experiences.

WIL partners

Throughout the three topics, you will find information and activities tailored to the perspectives of students and WIL partners. For example, an activity might ask you to run a coaching conversation with someone you know, which fits the role of a WIL supervisor/sponsor.

Students

It might sound like there is limited value in this learning experience if you are a student as you might expect to be on the receiving end of a coaching conversation rather than the one leading the conversation. However, there is value in working through all of the activities regardless of the audience the activity seems tailored for. You will:

  • understand the logistics, struggles, and benefits of coaching from a diverse range of perspectives
  • appreciate why a WIL supervisor might choose to answer your question with a question, rather than give you the solution straight away
  • be better prepared to identify the opportunities for coaching when they present themselves during a WIL experience
  • be able to navigate coaching conversations to enhance your learning experience.

Educators

There are downloadable assets to assist unit/course coordinators with the design and delivery of WIL focused programs.

Checkpoints

To provide insights to the different perspectives for coaching, this module includes check-points to target the key takeaway messages for students, WIL partners and unit/course coordinators. These check-points are designed to keep you grounded with the content provided, as well as to appreciate the different nuances that coaching has for the different parties involved in WIL relationships.

Start your journal
