Intellectual Property in Commercial Settings

University IP Policies

Since IP can be assigned before it is created, it is important to read all documents that you sign when you first join any organisation. For university students, you are governed by the policies of your academic institution. Most universities will have an IP policy that applies to work you create while at university.

Important note

When undertaking any industry placement, work experience or work integrated learning unit as part of your studies, you should check that the IP Policy of your university does not conflict with the workplace’s expectations about ownership of IP created during your placement. If unsure, speak to your Unit Coordinator or lecturer about your concerns. Do not sign any agreement at the workplace before speaking with your lecturer.

What is the IP policy of your University?

Search your University’s website for expectations and rules around:

  • Copyright
  • Intellectual property
  • Moral rights; and
  • Work Integrated Learning policies.

Follow up with your unit coordinator if there appears to be any conflicts over ownership of intellectual property.
