Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this Module, you will be able to: 

  1. Explain the meaning of intellectual property and define the basic concepts of intellectual property law;
  2. Evaluate and determine which type of intellectual property right applies to a given situation or output;
  3. Explain why only expressions are protected by law, and ideas, facts and data are not;
  4. Outline the purpose, scope and application of copyright law and patent law; and
  5. Critically analyse how and why your own creations will be subject to IP law and evaluate the implications of IP law within professional practice and specialised technical and creative contexts.
